hetterson

About a month ago, a clothing brand named Hetterson was featured on WishWishWish and I immediately fell in love with the delicate-looking fabrics and I especially died over the nautical stripes. I did some research and contacted Hannah Elise, the designer behind the collection. See Q&A below!

Why did you decide to change your line's name from Bekvam to Hetterson?
It was time for a change, I wanted a simple name that represented me and my label. Hetterson (a combo of my first, middle and last name) fit the bill perfectly.

When were you first ecologically aware, and would you ever make clothing that is NOT eco-friendly?
I remember a demonstration at my fiber arts guild when I was 13. A woman came and talked for a couple hours about organic cotton and its qualities. I was fascinated and went right home to find out more. Unfortunately at the the time there was very little info about OC [organic cotton] and I wasn't able to locate suitable fabrics for a few more years, even though organic cotton has become more mainstream now, it's still a challenge sourcing ethically produce organic fabrics.

How old are you, and do you think age is a factor in being a successful designer?
19. I would say age is no factor, as long as you are passionate about what you do and work hard at the technical parts, you will be successful. I really believe that everyone has something they are meant for, the thing they love most and are driven to do. For me, that's making clothing.

What are three things that you think influence your line the most?
My inspiration tends to change a lot. Right now I'm inspired by: utilitarian menswear, navajo and pueblo textiles.

Who is your favorite designer?
That's a toughie. Hmmm...one of my original favorites is Claire McCardell. I remember seeing her clothing for the first time in a book years ago and loving every piece.

If you weren't designing clothing, what would you be doing instead?
I would probably be doing something related to food. Until recently, I had been working in a small chocolate shop. It was the next best thing to working for myself. If I wasn't designing I would still be eating making chocolate all day long.

Everything currently for sale in your collection is over $200. Would you ever consider doing a lower-priced line for people who love Hetterson, but aren't able to spend a lot?
At this time I make each and every piece by hand. I put the best quality materials into my clothing and each garment takes an immense amount of time to create. It's all the little details that make my clothing so special! Big pieces like the sweaters and dresses will always be at a higher price point because of the time involved, however I will have some smaller accessories available this spring and summer at a lower price point.

What do you have in mind for Hetterson's future?
I'd like to keep growing while still keeping production local and maintaining the handmade aspect of my line.

Visit Hetterson here! In addition to her online shop, Hannah also runs a lovely blog.

  2. She's only 19? Boy, that makes me feel lazy, being 22 and all.

The collection reminds me of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, which is really awesome because they're sort of my idols!
